INSTRUCTIONS FOR BUILDING AND TESTING CVC
To install OSS CVC, you need to either copy cvc and cvc64 binaries
to the bin directory in this release directory if you are a enterprise
OSS CVC customer. Other make the cvc64 (and probably cvc) binaries and
install them in the bin directory in this release.
A. UNDERSTAND AND AGREE TO THE "OSS CVC DUAL LICENSING MODIFIED ARTISTIC
OPEN SOURCE SOFTWARE LICENSE"
PLEASE READ THE OSS CVC DUAL LICENSING MODIFIED ARTISTIC OPEN SOURCE SOFTWARE
LICENSE CAREFULLY BEFORE INSTALLING OR USING OSS CVC. A COPY OF THE
LICENSE IS IN THIS DIRECTORY AND AT THE TOP OF EACH SOURCE FILE.
IF YOU DO NOT AGREE TO THE TERMS OF THE OSS CVC LICENSE, DO NOT USE THE
SOFTWARE.
Read the CVC OSS open source licensing faq if you have questions. Installing
and Using the OSS CVC Package for simulation either commercial or non
commercial Verilog simulation is fine and follows the normal open source
pattern.
B. CHECKING YOUR SYSTEM CONFIGURATION
Prior to running CVC, make sure your system configuration is correct by
running the 'checkcvc' in the bin directory of the OSS CVC release
directory.
You should see the following message:
"System configuration is fine for CVC compilation."
If you receive anything other than this please and you are an enterprise
OSS CVC customer, contact us for help on making adjustments to your system
configuration (for example gcc packages must be installed).
If you have a 64-bit system and would like to run 32-bit version also
run 'checkcvc32'. The 32-bit version uses less RAM for large designs and
is faster on older X86 hardware but will not work for simulations with
more than 2**31 ticks.
C. Where to put CVC files
OSS CVC expects binaries to be in the bin directory in this release OSS
CVC directory. If you are an enterprise OSS CVC customer copy the
supplied binary files into the bin directory. Otherwise make and install
the OSS CVC binaries in the bin directory.
The installation tests assume that cvc64 (and cvc) are in the bin directory
or the /tmp directory (for testing development versions) and that the
pli_incs directory is in the OSS CvC release top level directory.
Once CVC is ready for use in Verilog development, you probably want
to copy cvc64 (and cvc) to /usr/local/bin if you have system admin
privledges. You also need to decide where to put the pli_incs directory
of IEEE 1364 standard c/c++ include files.
If you are using OSS CVC PLI, you will need to do some thinking about
where you want your .so libraries to go.
D. RUNNING INSTALLATION TESTS
We recommend that you next run the various installation tests in the
"tests_and_examples" directory. You should always run the basic
functionality test in the install.test directory by executing the
"inst_test.sh" script. There should be no diff output messages printed.
See the README file in the install.test directory for more information.
Before running inst_test.sh (or other installation tests) you need to
copy CVC to some directory that is on you Linux executable PATH environment.
The installation shell scripts assume that cvc (or cvc64 if you use the
cvc64 flag as an argument to the scripts) can be executed without giving
a explicit path to the binary. If you do not want to install CVC, you can
copy cvc (or cvc64 or both) to /tmp. The installation shell scripts will
look for a cvc/cvc634 in /tmp, if there is no cvc on your Linux executable
PATH.
The PLI tests need only be run if you are going to use CVC with the PLI
or use the dpi_ interface.
See the README files in each of the "tests_and_examples" sub-directories
for detailed instructions on running the tests.
If you are not sure what version of CVC you are running, execute
CVC with no arguments and it will print out its version and the Red Hat
Enterprise Linux (RHEL) OS release its libraries are compatible with.
Type "CVC -h" for a help page of CVC options and features.
E. GETTING STARTED USING CVC
The CVC release assumes you are familiar with Verilog and have at least run
simulations with some other Verilog simulator. CVC has standard command
line look and feel and options as much as possible. The best way to start
using CVC is to study the various examples in the "tests_and_examples"
release files directory and in the "open_cores" example design directory.
To start using the CVC PLI, edit the various make files in the appropriate
"examples.vpi" or "examples.dpi" directory.
The best way to start using the new unique CVC coverage features is to the
run CVC on the various ".vc" files in verilog_da_bnchmarks/das_cpu
directory. In order to run those examples, you must make and binaries
from the programs in the coverage/src directory. The README files tell
you what to type. There are no automatic scripts since the idea is that
the examples need study. The Helper c source programs are documented
in the "README.coverage.helper-programs" file in the coverage directory.
See the cvc_quick_start.pdf for more detailed instructions on getting
started and using OSS CVC.
If you need to rebuild the checkcvc and checkcvc64 binaries, run the
make files in the chkcvc.src.dir directory.
